NCOP to vote on MPRDA on March 27

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is scheduled to vote on the Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Amendment Act on March 27, said BDLive.

The approval of the NCOP virtually guarantees the passing of the legislation which hands the mines minister discretion over so-called designated and strategic minerals and gives the government a one fifth free-carry in oil and gas projects.

BDLive said that if the NCOP approved the proposed legislation, then the National Assembly may be recalled in April for at least a day to consider the draft laws. The National Assembly went into recess last week ahead of national elections on May 7.
