Cosatu, EFF differ on platinum strike

[miningmx.com] – THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the Economic Freedom Fighers (EFF) differed widely on the platinum strike nearing its tenth week and which has no prospect of ending soon, according to reports by Sapa and Reuters.

“We believe that it is irresponsible to take workers on such a long strike where there are no prospects of achieving the demands,” Cosatu said in a statement.

The strike, staged by the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) is demanding a basic R12,500 per month salary for all workers.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said, however, that AMCU’s demands ought to be made law for all mining companies. “EFF believes this wage must be imposed by law as a minimum wage for all mineworkers. The leadership of the EFF will visit the mines where workers are on strike to show solidarity,” said Ndlozi.
