[miningmx.com] – COAL deliveries to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) have been halted following power failures experienced by the uMhlatuze municipality, said Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) in an announcement.
TFR, a division of state-owned transport utility, Transnet, said coal deliveries to RBCT would be partially restored by February 4 but full operations would only resume by the week ending February 9.
The failure was caused when uMhlatuze Municipality experienced faults on both cables that feed the Hydra Substation which in turn feeds RBCT. Transnet’s general freight would continue uninterrupted, it said.
“Discussions have taken place between all major stakeholders including the mines, TFR, RBCT and the Municipality on recovery plans. The power outage comes on the back of the coal value chain achieving record railings of 70.81 million tonnes in 2013,” it said.
