Coal miners told improve or face regulation

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s Department of Public Enterprises has warned the country’s coal producers to improve the quality of its supply of coal to Eskom or face regulation, said BDLive.

Citing Mayihlome Tshwete, spokesman for public enterprises minister, Malusi Gigaba, BDLive said the department had met with the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the Department of Energy in which it said it was untenable that as custodian of South Africa’s electricity supply Eskom had to contend with poor quality coal.

Faced with a choice between providing better coal and regulation, the public enterprises department would prefer the “least painful option”. This follows load-shedding in South Africa on March 6 after the supply of wet coal to Kendal power station which caused the installation to shut down 3,000MW of power.
