SA platinum losses now at 500,000 ounces

[miningmx.com] – PLATINUM losses in 2014 have now exceeded those of 2012, the year miners were shot dead at Lonmin’s Marikana mine and violence halted platinum operations across the sector, said Bloomberg News.

Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin have lost 499,000 ounces in production compared to 496,359 ounces in 2012 as a strike over wages called by the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) at the companies moved into the seventh week on March 13, the newswire said.

This is equal to R8bn in earnings while striking workers have foregone R3.6bn in wages, said Bloomberg News citing a website run by the three producers. AMCU is demanding a basic R12,500/month wage for all workers.
