Rescue halted as miners fear arrest

[miningmx.com] – ILLEGAL miners trapped in an abandoned gold mine east of Johannesburg refused rescue because they feared being arrested, said Bloomberg News citing Werner Vermaak, a spokesman for Emergency Rescue 24.

The rescue team spent eight hours removing heavy boulders that had blocked the entrance to the mine shaft and had managed to bring 11 miners to surface. A twelfth miner, however, went back down the shaft after the rescued miners had been arrested, said Bloomberg News.

“It’s very difficult to say how many are still trapped,’ Vermaak said. “Those who were arrested didn’t say how many. They are afraid of incriminating themselves.’
