NUM, Northam deal may set AMCU tactics

[miningmx.com] – THE wage dispute between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Northam Platinum was likely to influence the approach of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) in its disputes, an analyst said.

“Tactically, AMCU may be waiting for the outcome at Northam which, if successful from NUM’s point of view, will undoubtedly spur AMCU to demand more,” Imara SP Reid analyst Steve Meintjes said in a note cited by BDLive.

“If NUM caves in at Northam, it [AMCU] will then have the choice of trying to settle for something better or, with 48 hours notice to management, going for broke with an all-out strike at the three biggest mines,” he said.

“Either way, we’ll soon know whether the platinum industry can move forward or take yet another seriously damaging blow,” he said. If there were strikes in the affected companies, shares could drop by 10% -15%,” he said.

AMCU has certificates of non-resolution regarding wage talks with Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum.
