NUMSA plans national strike to change mining

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is planning a one day national strike in an effort to press home changes to the mining sector including export taxes on strategic minerals and beneficiation.

In an interview with BDLive, Numsa president, Andrew Chirwa, said the union – South Africa’s largest – was in the second phase of its economic demands which are centred on beneficiation of all strategic minerals, a ban on the export of scrap metals, rebuilding of foundries, import parity pricing and an export tax on all strategic minerals.

“We do not have a set date yet, but we are setting in motion the processes. Once we reach a deadlock in Nedlac (National Economic Development and Labour Council), we will have a date for rolling mass action, that is our United Front at work,” Chirwa told BDLive.
