Eskom builds affected by NUMSA strike

[miningmx.com] – THE strike by about 220,000 members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) interrupted construction of Eskom’s two new power installations Medupi and Kusile, said Bloomberg News.

Contractors employed by South Africa’s largest construction company, Murray & Roberts, on the boiler construction at Medupi stayed away while about 1,000 workers didn’t clock in for work at Kusile, Bloomberg News said.

About 10,000 contractors reported for duty at each site, compared with the usual 15,000, Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger said. The two power stations are expected to contribute about 9,500MW to the South African power grid when completed.
