[miningmx.com] – PLANS by Anglo American to sell the Rustenburg platinum mines owned by its subsidiary, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), would dent investor confidence in South Africa, said Jesse Duarte, the ANC’s deputy secretary-general.
Duarte was quoted in Bloomberg News which cited her column in the City Press newspaper in which she said there was also potential for huge job losses if the mines were sold.
Anglo American CEO, Mark Cutifani, said last month that the group was considering divesting of its Rustenburg mines because they were unprofitable. The economic condition of the mines was damaged further by a five-month strike over wages.
