
[miningmx.com] – RECENT meetings of the executive committees of the ANC and the South African Communist Party, the first since national elections in June, have returned to the debate of enforcing higher taxation on the mining sector.
Citing economic transformation committee chairman, Enoch Godongwana, BDLive said the ANC believed it was time to move the recommendations of the 2012 Strategic Intervention in the Mining Sector (Sims) paper forward by enforcing a tax on super profits defined as in excess of a 15% return.
In a separate meeting, the SACP said resource rents ought to be considered which was one of the findings of Sims, according to BDLive. Both matters are being looked into by the Davis Committee chaired by Judge David Davis which is conducting a review of South Africa’s tax regime.
