Ramphele quits party politics

[miningmx.com] – MAMPHELA Ramphele, leader of newly founded political party, Agang, has quit party politics ending a brief stint in public service that analysts described had been a disaster.

Speaking to BDLive, analysts said they doubted whether Agang would survive as there was no apparent succession plan. “Agang was already on life support and I am afraid that her decision to leave the party means it’s the end of Agang,’ said Daniel Silke, a political analyst.

“I return to civil society to continue to pursue the idealism that has driven me all my life as an active citizen,’ Ramphele said.

“I will therefore be leaving party politics, having accomplished my aim of creating a political vehicle to enable those who remain outside the political mainstream to have a voice,’ she said.

Ramphele, the former chairperson of Gold Fields, said the gold firm had been forced to accept a BEE partner by the South African government – an allegation that is now under investigation by the Securities Exchange Commision.
