Lonmin to keep mine open for second day

[miningmx.com] – LONMIN would keep its mines open for a second day in an effort to break a 16-week strike, said Bloomberg News.

The platinum firm reopened its operations on May 14 after evidence from workers that they wanted to return to work. Lonmin had conducted a campaign using text messages among other techniques after failing to reach a wage agreement with majority union, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU).

“Things are under control despite the concerns and high tensions,’ Happy Nkhoma, a Lonmin spokesman, told the newswire company. He didn’t specify how many workers returned yesterday, but he expected attendance to rise in coming days, said Bloomberg News.
