
[miningmx.com] – SOUTH African gold mining companies are attempting to stop a class action by former miners who have contracted silicosis, according to a report by City Press which was republished on Fin24.
The miners are not questioning actual allegations of liability and damages but rather than the issue be brought as a class action which they argue would be too ‘gargantuan’ for the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to handle, City Press said.
AngloGold Ashanti said the class action “boggles the imagination’ and that it would require more than 50 lawyers representing mines and mine workers in a case “no viable legal proceeding could ever accommodate’.
