[miningmx.com] – MINERS were returning to work at South Africa’s platinum mines in large numbers following the end of a five month strike in the sector over wages, said BDLive.
There had been “a massive turnout”, the online publication said citing Charmane Russell, spokeswoman for Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin. No incidents of violence had been reported, she said.
The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union called a strike on January 23 demanding a basic R12,500 per month salary for entry-level workers which, in some cases, equated to a tripling in wages.
The agreement, signed on June 25, averaged an 18% increase for the platinum producers in the first year. However, there is an expectation that the companies will seek to restructure their mines in the long-term.
