Eskom, BHP power deal has cost R11.5bn

[miningmx.com] – A POWER deal between Eskom and BHP Billiton’s aluminium smelters in South Africa dating from the Nineties has costthe country about R11.5bn, said BDLive citing a report by non-profit organisation, Tips.

In terms of the agreement, the price of electricity BHP Billiton pays at its Bayside and Hillside smelters falls in proportion with the price of aluminium. The smelters use about 5.5% of South Africa’s total generating capacity.

Tips said there were BHP Billiton to adhere to Eskom’s Megaflex rates which the rest of industry pays the mining group’s smelters would go out of business.
