Zambia’s Lungu to meet unions on job cuts

[miningmx.com] – ZAMBIA president, Edgar Lungu, is to meet with the country’s unions to discuss the impact of plans by copper producers, including Glencore, to cut thousands of jobs, said Bloomberg News.

Citing James Chansa, president at the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers, Bloomberg News said the union was hopeful that “something fruitful” would come out of the meeting which is planned for today (November 20).

Glencore plans to cut 7,000 jobs at its Zambia copper operations, including 5,000 contract employees, while First Quantum Minerals has indicated it plans to cut another 5,000 contract employees, said Bloomberg News.
