NCOP approves MPRDA amendments

[miningmx.com] – PROPOSED amendments to South Africa’s Minerals & Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) are to be signed into law by the country’s president, Jacob Zuma, after the amendments were approved by parliament’s second chamber, the National Council of Provinces today, said Bloomberg News.

The amendments are controversial because they provide a high degree of discretion to the mines minister over items such as strategic minerals and provide the government with a 20% free-carry in oil and gas projects, including shale.

The National Assembly approved the measures on March 13, said the newswire.
