Mathunjwa convinced strike remains strong

[miningmx.com] – JOSEPH Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) said support for a strike in the platinum sector over wages, now into its 16th week, remained strong.

This is despite comments by platinum companies that worker attendance at its mines, which have been reopened in the case of Lonmin, have been increasing. The platinum miners have not disclosed statistics, however.

Quoting Mathunjwa at a rally at Wonderkop yesterday, BDLive said: “This is the very same sentiment they have expressed since January (doubting) how long the workers can go on. It has now been four months,” he said.

Mpumi Sithole, spokesperson for Anglo American Platinum, was quoted as saying: “There is an uptick but we are not giving out specific numbers. We are encouraged that there is an increase”.
