Earthlife in bid to stop Pelindaba smelting

[miningmx.com] – EARTHLIFE Africa has asked South Africa’s Gauteng High Court to stop smelting at the Pelindaba facilities of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA (Necsa), said BDLive.

The environmental activist said the smelting was illegal and could make South Africa a “nuclear waste junkyard”. Necsa’s Pelindaba facilities smelt radioactive and scrap metal in order to decontaminate the radioactive metal, said BDLive.

The dispute over the facilities has been underway for 10 years, said BDLive. Necsa CEO Phumzile Tshelane told BDLive the smelters would be used “exclusively” to decontaminate 14,000 tons of slightly contaminated metallic material in Necsa’s possession. “South Africa does not import or export radioactive waste,” he said.
