Harmony to cut 1,500 jobs, says Solidarity

[miningmx.com] – HARMONY Gold would reduce its workforce at its 6,000-strong Kusasalethu mine west of Johannesburg by about a quarter, equal to 1,500 people said BDLive, citing union Solidarity.

Harmony has started a 60-day process of engagement with organised labour and other relevant parties under section 189 of the Labour Relations Act at Kusasalethu. Without restructuring the mine’s viability was threatened, said Harmony Gold.

“The current situation is clearly unsustainable. Harmony’s intention is to restore the mine to profitability in the fourth quarter of the current financial year and – in so doing – preserve as many jobs as possible,” said Graham Briggs, CEO of Harmony.
