Northam issues January 16 strike ultimatum

[miningmx.com] – ABOUT 40% of Northam Platinum’s 4,600 workers reported for the morning shift on January 15 after being ordered back to work by the Labour Court. This followed an unprocedural strike that had been called by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

The platinum firm said that it had provided remaining striking workers with a final opportunity to return to work on January 16. Failure to return to work could lead to disciplinary measures or dismissal.

The strike was called on January 13 after the NUM objected to certain recruitment, disciplinary and other procedural measures allegedly implemented by mine management.
