NUM drops demand to 10% as strike starts

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has lowered its gold industry wage demand to 10% from 60% giving support to the industry belief the union hasn’t much appetite for prolonged strike action which began last night.

BDLive quoted the Chamber of Mines as saying that the NUM’s new offer “significantly closes the gap between employers and the union”. The chamber, which last offered 6.5% for entry-level workers, added that discussions were continuing.

“It has officially started,” Reuters cited chamber spokesperson Charmane Russell as having said last night. “There are people who have not gone underground,” she said.

The full extent of the strike will only become clear later today, said Reuters.
NUM’s rival, the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU), had not joined the strike. Its leader, Joseph Mathunjwa, said his union was still consulting with its members.

“We are not part of that strike for now . we have approached CEOs with (the request) that our members should be protected as they turn up for work,” he told BDLive.
