[miningmx.com] – COAL expansion projects in southern Africa, either actual or planned, represented some $45.5bn in capital expenditure, said BDLive citing a report from Frost & Sullivan.
The research company’s figures include some 53 projects either in prefeasibility, bankable feasibility and construction phases and include projects near completion such as the Grootegeluk Medupi Expansion Project undertaken by Exxaro Resources.
The expansions were being driven by “rising global and regional demand for energy, expectations of rising coal prices over the next three to five years and abundant coal reserves in the continent,” BDLive said.
Last year, 266.1mt of coal were produced in the region and this will rise 16% to 308mt by 2018, BDLive said citing the Frost & Sullivan report.
