
[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s iron and steel industry, and other manufacturers, have been dealt a blow following a call to strike by National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the country’s largest union.
According to BDLive, the union is asking for a 12% wage increase with its call to strike likely to be observed by two-thirds of the union’s 220,000 members – a development that would have a disastrous effect on iron and steel production.
Econometrix chief economist Azar Jammine told BDLive that a protracted strike by NUMSA would likely push South Africa into recession.
