Gold One dismisses 1,035 workers

[miningmx.com] — GOLD One International said the company has
dismissed 1,035 employees from its Modder East mine following the workers’
participation in an illegal strike last week.

Modder East’s workforce typically comprises 1,800 people.

“Management considered the representations made against dismissal and concluded
that, in almost all cases, there were insufficient mitigating factors against
the sanction of dismissal,’ read a company statement. “Contingencies remain in place
to ensure that the operation remains profitable during this time.’

The strike was initiated by the Professional Transport Allied Workers Union and was
subsequently interdicted by the Labour Court.

The National Union of Mineworkers is the only recognised union at Modder East.
