
[miningmx.com] – COAL miners BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa (Becsa) and Anglo Thermal Coal had failed to adequately interact with communities near their mines, said BDLive citing a report by the Benchmarks Foundation.
Both companies had formal complaints mechanisms but Becsa used them to deal largely with employer-employee issues, which were only a small part of community engagement, said the Benchmarks Foundation.
As for Anglo Thermal Coal, it had an over-reliance on consultancies to engage with communities on its behalf,’ said John Capel, executive director of the Benchmarks Foundation.
