Renamo, Frelimo shake hands on peace deal

[miningmx.com] – MOZAMBIQUE’S Renamo and Frelimo, the ruling party, shook hands on a peace agreement ending months of conflict between the two which had interrupted the southern African country’s emerging coal industry.

Vale and Rio Tinto were both forced to halt coal exports after tensions between Frelimo and Renamo interrupted rail services from Tete province where large amounts of coking coal are located. The agreement comes a month before Mozambique goes to the polls.

“I hope that the agreement sealed today will end the inequalities between Mozambicans and bring opportunities to all,’ said Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama in a report by Bloomberg News.

“Peace is the most valuable resource that we can have and this moment is crucial to reinforce a good environment of business in our country,’ Armando Guebuza, Mozambique president said in a speech at the ceremony.
