[miningmx.com] – ZAMBIA’s mines minister, Christopher Yaluma, labelled Glencore’s decision to reduce mining activity at its subsidiary, Sable Zinc Kabwe, as ‘illegal’, according to a report by Reuters republished on CNBCAfrica’s website.
“We don’t tolerate retrenchments done without following procedure,” Yaluma told Reuters. Zambia has in the past threatened to revoke the mining licenses of companies planning to cut staff.
The dispute relates to unpaid VAT returns by the Zambian government to Glencore on the basis that the Swiss-based miner had not supplied sufficient documentation regarding the export of copper from Zambia.
Glencore has already threatened to slow expansions at its Mopani Copper Mines in Zambia as part of the same dispute.
