Aurora directors may face R24m civil claims

[miningmx.com] – THE former directors of Aurora Empowerment Systems, which includes Khulubuse Zuma, the nephew of South African president, Jacob Zuma, could face civil claims totalling R24m, said BDLive.

The online publication cited a portfolio committee on mineral resources which met in the South African parliament on November 5 which said asked that Aurora’s liquidators, who are suing the directors, take the unusual step of pursuing civil claims first before criminal claims.

In addition to Khulubuse Zuma, Aurora’s directors including President Jacob Zuma’s lawyer, Michael Hulley and the grandson of the late former president Nelson Mandela. Aurora bought a number of gold mining shafts from Pamodzi Gold but were never able to make sustainable profits from the assets.

In the end, the shafts were abandoned leaving thousands of workers destitute. The assets were subsequently raided and stripped for scrap metal and parts, often amid chaotic scenes of running gun battles.
