SA’s SDT refuses to disclose buyers of gems

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s State Diamond Trader (SDT) has declined to say to whom it sells diamonds as the matter was not in the public interest, said BDLive citing comments in Parliament.

Following weeks of demands for details regarding the SDT’s clients, Dolly Mokgatle, chairperson of the SDT, responded via letter which was read out in Parliament yesterday. She also cited the Protection of Personal Information Act.

The main business of the SDT is to buy and sell rough diamonds to promote equitable access to and beneficiation of diamond resources. It is eligible by law to purchase up to 10% of the run of mine from all diamond producers in South Africa, said BDLive.
