Miners to seek solution for silicosis sufferers

[miningmx.com] – FIVE South African mining companies have formed a group to study compensation and care for former employees suffering from silicosis – a development hailed by the country’s mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi.

“The industry now seems to be revisiting their strategy with regard to litigation,’ Ramatlhodi told Bloomberg News. The group “suggests a shift’ in policy, he said. Silicosis is contracted after prolonged exposure to silica in dust.

The companies, which includes AngloGold Ashanti, said they should work together to seek a solution to silicosis. “These companies do not believe that they are liable in respect of the claims brought, and they are defending these,’ they added.
