Eskom points finger at Mitsubishi again

[miningmx.com] – ESKOM has accused Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Africa (MHPSA) of defective work on the Medupi power project, said BDLive. This is not the first time MHPSA – formerly Hitachi Power Africa – has been identified by the South African power utility of below par work.

According to the newspaper, MHPSA has caused Eskom to compromise on a crucial steam-quality testin which steam is released at high speed through temporary pipes to clean the boiler after construction. Steam containing impurities can damage the turbine blades when the plant comes into operation, said BDLive.

MHPSA denied it had produced low quality work and that its tests had shown steam could be produced at the correct pressure.

In any event, Eskom had decided that it would not rebuild the piping, and cause a substantial delay, but would put in place mitigating measures, said BDLive.
