SA mining fatalities down in 2014

[miningmx.com] – FATALITIES on South African mines declined in 2014 compared to the 93 people who lost their lives in 2013, said BDLive.

Official figures are not yet available, but Sietse van der Woude, safety and sustainability advisor to the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, told the publication that the number of lives lost while mining was lower than last year. By November, 80 people had been killed whilst working in South African mines, said BDLive.

Notable ‘first ever’ achievements by mining companies “… are giving us the trend we are seeing and giving people hope that we can say it is possible to have fatality-free operations,” Van der Woude told BDLive.
