Gold strike unlikely after platinum stand-off

[miningmx.com] – A PROLONGED strike in South Africa’s gold sector was unlikely, according to a Bloomberg News article, re-published in BDLive, in which the comments of the country’s deputy mines minister, Godfrey Oliphant were cited.

Asked about prospects for a strike amid gold industry wage talks, due to kick off from later this year, Oliphant told Bloomberg News that important lessons were learned from the platinum industry strike of five-and-a-half months in 2014.

“Both for industry and labour, it was a hard lesson of that long strike of five months,” said Oliphant. He added, however, that South Africa’s labour laws allowed for collective bargaining but set no limits on the length of a legal strike.
