Kweyama ‘surprised’ by Eskom decisions

[miningmx.com] – Khanyisile Kweyama, head of Business Unity South Africa (Busa), and a director of Anglo American SA, alluded to her surprise that Eskom had suspended its top executives and launched an inquiry into its affairs.

Speaking in her capacity at Busa, she was quoted by BDLive as saying that certain decisions by Eskom “surprise us” despite her organisation participating in the ‘war room’, a tripartite committee consisting of unions, government and the private sector aimed at solving South Africa’s energy crisis.

“The energy challenge is the elephant in the room. For as long as we have instability in energy and electricity provision we are going to find people pulling back,” said Kweyama. “Fixing Eskom is a big one for us.”

BDLive said Kweyama called for more open consultations with the government, particularly when important decisions were made on energy plans.

“We sit with government and Eskom regularly and when we then hear about other changes, they surprise us because we are supposed to be part of that solution as well,” said Kweyama.
