Nene delivers blunt message to Lekgotla

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa finance minister Nlhanhla Nene said the government was partly responsible for the country’s poor economic growth rate, but picked out the power crisis as chief among the national ills.

BDLive, citing a presentation by Nene to the ANC’s Lekgotla in January, said Nene also identified weak regulatory institutions, poor service delivery, governance problems at state-owned companies, extended periods of regulatory uncertainty and contradictory policies as national problems.

But Eskom’s problems were the cherry on the cake. “The shortage of electricity overshadows all other structural flaws in the economy and limits the impact of many of the positive reforms since 1994,” said Nene.
