Congo governor warns against tax hikes

[miningmx.com] – MOISE Katumbi, the governor the Democratic Republic of Congo’s copper-rich Katanga province, said the country should guard against increasing taxes whilst the price of the red metal was under pressure.

In a report by Reuters, Katumbi – who has been governor of the province since 2006 – said he was “scared” by the copper price today and called for a meeting with mining companies to thrash out a solution to plans to revise the Congo’s 2002 mining code.

“I am a little scared because with the price of copper today, it wouldn’t be good to make the business climate less secure,” said Katumbi. “We have to have a round table with miners and investors … to also see the other side,” he said.
