Eskom faces 17mt coal shortfall by 2017

[miningmx.com] – ESKOM faces a 17 million tonne (mt) coal shortfall by 2017 at its coal-fired plants, said BDLive citing comments in South Africa’s parliament by Lynne Brown, minister of public enterprises.

The shortfall relates to Matla, Tutuka and Hendrina power stations which run out of coal supplies this year, and Kriel and Arnot power stations which face the shortfall in 2017.

Eskom CEO, Brian Molefe, said earlier this month that the power utility did not face a coal crisis as it had “200 years of coal under the ground”.

An Eskom spokesman confirmed some supply contracts needed to be renegotiated. Eskom has so far contracted 899mt for delivery from 2016 to 2030, said Brown.
