SA gold industry headed for prolonged wage talks

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s gold sector was heading towards prolonged wage negotiations after all four unions representing some 95,000 workers rejected the Chamber of Mines’ offer, said BDLive.

“We couldn’t move. Employers themselves are not showing any interest in ending these negotiations any time soon,” David Sipunzi, general-secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) told the publication.

Manzini Zungu, spokesman for the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) rejected the chamber’s social and sustainability compact which proposes up to a 13% increase for entry-level workers, and profit-share provided that the unions agree to a five-year wage deal among other items.

Solidarity and UASA, the two other main unions represented at the talks, rejected elements of the chamber’s proposals relating to the extension of the retirement age and the increases offered to workers employed at higher levels.
