Operations normalised at Northam’s Booysendal

[miningmx.com] – NORTHAM Platinum said production at its Booysendal mine in Steelpoort in South Africa’s Limpopo province had been “normalised” following community protests in the area.

“This follows on a successful intervention by the Minister of Mineral Resources, officials from the Department of Mineral Resources, and local authorities to seek to resolve the issues that appear to have fuelled the community unrest,” the company said.

Northam said earlier this week that protesters had blocked roads and disrupted transport preventing employees from getting to work. There had also been incidents of damage to the Lebalelo pipeline which supplies water to eastern limb operations.

Mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, visited the region on July 21 after initially calling for calm in the region. The protests related to service delivery problems in the region.

“Milling operations continued whilst employees were prevented from getting to work,” Northam said in its statement.
