Palabora halts mining amid protests

[miningmx.com] – COPPER mining at Palabora Mining Company had been stopped following protests by members of a nearby community over job recruitment procedures, said Reuters citing a company official.

“They have blocked the buses, we are unable to ferry employees from and to work. We are losing between R25m and R27m ($1.9m to $2.11m) a day in revenue,” said Hulisani Nemaxwi, Palabora Copper’s corporate affairs manager.

Palabora’s mine – in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province – produces 43,000 tonnes of refined copper annually but the protests had affected output, the official said.
