
[miningmx.com] – ZAMBIA’S government would start discussions with Mopani Copper Mines about retrenchments planned by the copper producer’s parent company, Glencore, said Reuters.
“We are about to start discussions with Mopani,” said Christopher Yaluma, Zambia’s mining minister. “We get very concerned when pronouncements are made about retrenchments,” he said, adding that as parent company, Glencore was “a little distant”.
Glencore, Vedanta Resources and China’s NFC Africa and CNMC Luanshya Copper Mine have all indiciated they will shut down some operations because of the harsh business environment which includes power shortages, said Reuters.
