Lucara finds largest gem in a century

[miningmx.com] – CANADIAN diamond mining firm, Lucara Diamond Corporation, has recovered the largest diamond – at some 1,111 carats – in more than a century, said Bloomberg News.

The gem was mined at Lucara’s Karowe mine in Botswana and is second in size only to the Cullinan diamond which was cut into the British Crown jewels. Lucara’s discovery is just smaller than a tennis ball, the newswire said.

“The significance of the recovery of a gem-quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century and the continued recovery of high-quality stones from the south lobe, cannot be overstated,” said William Lamb, Lucara CEO.
