Arnot closure would be “a calamity”: NUM

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said it was “a calamity” that Eskom may close Arnot, the Mpumalanga province colliery operated by Exxaro Resources.

Eskom and Exxaro have not been able to agree a coal sales agreement for some 1.4 million tonnes/year of supply which could result in Exxaro ceasing to operate the mine. There is some dispute which party ‘owns’ the mine, although Exxaro said it only owns a mining right to operate Arnot.

“Our members are facing a bleak future and there are possible job losses of 1,139 permanent employees excluding contractors with 546 employees at Exxaro Arnot Coal Mine. This is a calamity,” said the NUM in a statement.
