Nene firing slammed by analysts, opposition

[miningmx.com] – ANALYSTS and opposition parties slammed South African president, Jacob Zuma’s decision to fire finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene and replace him with the virtually unknown Desmond van Rooyen.

“Accompanied by no reasons for such a drastic move, one can only conclude that tonight’s action is yet another example of how President Zuma puts himself first and the country second,” Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane told BDLive.

Nic Borain, political analyst at BNP Paribas said the firing of Nene would be interpreted as Zuma’s response to Nene attempting to hold the line on fiscal discipline, in particular refusing to give in to demands made by South African Airways (SAA) chairwoman Dudu Myeni, or on Zuma’s “preposterous pet nuclear project”.

The rand subsequently weakened against the dollar and was last trading at 15.042 to the dollar.
