[miningmx.com] – THE former unit of Rio Tinto Group in Zimbabwe, Murowa Diamonds, plans to expand output of rough diamonds fourfold this year, said Bloomberg News citing Lovemore Chimuka, a spokesman for the diamond firm.
“Our plan is to produce more than a million carats this year,” said Chimuka. Production was 250,000 carats in 2015, he said. The company will inject $60m into the mine over the next four years as part of expansion drive.
Murowa, which produced 450,000 carats in 2014, intends to be the biggest diamond miner in the country, Chimuka told Bloomberg News. “With this new capital injection we want to increase mine life and also increase our operations,” he said. “Last year was a bad year, but we want to do well this year.”
