Strike kicks off at Northam’s Zondereinde

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) kicked off a strike at Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine last night, said Bloomberg News which cited the union’s negotiator at Northam, Ecliff Tantsi.

“We will be on standby for any possible call, but nothing has been forthcoming’ regarding an offer,” Tantsi told Bloomberg News.

Northam’s Zondereinde division was served with a strike notice after the company’s latest wage offer of 7% to 8% was rejected. The NUM, which has more than 7,000 members at the company, demands an average increase of 61%, Northam said.
