Fleeing Renamo says 1992 peace deal is over

[miningmx.com] – RENAMO, Mozambique’s opposition party and a former rebel movement said a 1992 peace deal signed in Rome ending civil war in the country was over after it claimed Frelimo, the ruling party, had attacked its headquarters.

Dhlakama is alive and in good health despite that attack,’ said Fernando Mazanga, a spokesman for the group referring to its leader, Afonso Dhlakama. “The attack definitely puts to an end the Rome peace agreement and from now on we cannot assure what will happen,’ he told Bloomberg News.

The government has this year blamed a series of attacks on public transport in central Mozambique on Renamo and has clashed with the former guerrilla group on several occasions including the last four days, said Bloomberg News.

According to the BBC, the government forces captured the Sathunjira base in central Mozambique, forcing Dhlakama to flee.

About a million people were killed in the civil war that raged in Mozambique after it achieved independence from Portugal in 1975, it said.

“Peace is over in the country… The responsibility lies with the Frelimo government because they didn’t want to listen to Renamo’s grievances,” Mazanga told Reuters news agency.

Defence ministry spokesman Cristovao Chume said government forces had taken control of the base in response to an earlier attack on an army post by Renamo fighters.
He confirmed that Dhlakama had fled.
