Unions to reconsider ‘winner takes all’ principle

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s mining sector is re-considering the merits of the ‘winner takes all’ principle enshrined in the Labour Relations Act in which the majority union owns the lionshare of rights and privileges, said BDLive.

Citing labour expert Tony Healy of Tony Healy & Associates, so-called majoritarianism may be overturned as mining companies also seek to recognise a broader base of unions on South Africa’s mines. A broader representation of unions is also being considered by organised labour as well.

The development is down to the loss of the dominance of the National Union of Mineworkers in the platinum industry. It has been replaced by the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union as the most popular union.
